Nanchang is the capital city of Jiangxi Province and one of central cities of urban agglomeration in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, a core city of Poyang Lake Ecological and Economic Zone, and a national famous historical and cultural city named by the State Council. It now administers three counties (Nanchang County, Jinxian County and Anyi County), six districts (Honggutan District, Donghu District, Xihu District, Qingyunpu District, Qingshanhu District and Xinjian District), three state-level development zones (Nanchang National Economic and Technological Development Zone, Nanchang National High-tech Industrial Development Zone, and Nanchang Xiaolan Economic and Technological Development Zone) as well as Wanli Administration. It owns regional area of 7402 square kilometers, with total population of 6.03 million, and it is the political, economic, cultural, technological and traffic center of the province.
Historical Famous City
First built in 202 BC, with over 2200-year history, Nanchang boasts abundant cultural inheritance and precious humanities imprints, having been featured by “abundant nature’s treasures and outstanding people” since ancient times. There are many celebrities born in Nanchang, having cultivated Ling Lun (Mr. Hong Ya)—the founder of Chinese music, Xu Ruzi—a profound scholar in Nanzhou of Han Dynasty, Xu Xun—the founder of Jingming Sect and a water conservancy expert in the Jin Dynasty, Ba Da Shan Ren (Zhu Da)—a master of freehand brush work in the late Ming and early Qing dynasty, and so on. Masters in past dynasties like Zhu Xi and Wang Yangming had left famous stories and anecdotes in Nanchang. Nanchang possesses a lot of cultural relics, having more than 600 ancient cultural relics; Tengwang Pavilion is reputed as “one of three famous towers in Jiangnan”, Xishan Wanshou Palace is the birthplace of filial piety of Taoist Jingming Sect, and the archaeological discovery of Haihun Marquis tomb astonishes the world. The “August 1st Uprising” was begun here, the people’s army was born here, the thought of reform and opening-up was cultivated here, and the revolutionary gene is handed down from age to age, and all of these make Nanchang a city of heroes famous at home and abroad.
Nanchang is situated at the lower reach of such five rivers as Ganjiang River, Fuhe River, Xinjiang River, Raohe River and Xiuhe River, and the shore of Poyang Lake. It has been said since ancient times that Nanchang has advantageous water resources. With Ganjiang River passing through the city, it has developed water system with “one Ganjiang River and three other rivers connecting to ten lanes”, and the water area accounts for nearly 30%, ranking the first among the provincial capital cities in the country, and it is a veritable “Water Capital of China·Pearl of Poyang Lake”. The downtown area relies on Meiling West Mountain in the west, the city greening coverage rate reaches 43%, and the area of various kinds of wetlands accounts for more than 20%; the good air quality rate ranks in the forefront among national provincial capital cities for consecutive years, and maintains the first among the provincial capital cities in Central China for successive seven years. It is awarded National Model City of Civility, National Model City of Sanitation, National Forest City, National Garden City, and one of national first batch of Model City of Water Ecological Civilization.
Nanchang is an important node city for the co-construction of the Belt and Road, an important central city of the Yangtze River Economic Belt, a strategic pivot city for the rise of Central China, and a core city of the great Nanchang Metropolis Circle. More than 20 national pilot demonstrations have been approved in recent years, including National Demonstration City for Entrepreneurship and Innovation Base of Small and Micro Businesses, National Pilot City for Facilitating the Combination of Technology and Finance, Comprehensive Pilot City for Building New Mechanism of New Economy, and etc. It has broad development space with fast-changing city appearance. It mainly builds four major strategic emerging pillar industries (automobiles and new energy vehicles, electronic information, biomedicine, aviation equipment), four major characteristic advantageous traditional industries (green food, modern knitwear and textile, new materials, mechanical and electrical equipment manufacturing) and several producer service industries (industrial design, sci-tech consultation, inspection and detection, information service, financial service, mass entrepreneurship and innovation development, intelligent logistics), forming “4+4+X” new-type industrial development system.
