Nanchang University


   Nanchang University, a comprehensive university characterized by “Penetration of Arts, Science, Engineering and Medicine subjects, Combination of study, research and production”, is one of the national “211” Project key universities that was jointly constructed by the People’s Government of Jiangxi Province and the Ministry of Education. It is also an important base of talents cultivation, scientific research and commercialization of research findings for both the country and Jiangxi Province.
   The history of Nanchang University could be dated back to National Zhongzheng University and Jiangxi Public Medical School which were established in 1940 and 1921 respectively. In the year of 1993, Jiangxi University and Jiangxi Industrial University merged into the new Nanchang University, from when the name was adopted until now. In 1997, Nanchang University was listed among the national “211” Project key universities. In the year of 2004, the agreement on jointly developing Nanchang University was signed between the People's Government of Jiangxi Province and the Ministry of Education. NCU entered a new era of construction, reform and development when it merged with Jiangxi Medical College in 2005. During the past years, great attention was paid to NCU's development by party and state leaders, Ministry of Education, Jiangxi Provincial Party Committee and Provincial Government. The former Chairman of China Jiang Zemin, the former Premier Li Peng paid visits to NCU and left their inscriptions, and other national leaders including Li Lanqing, Zeng Qinghong, Wu Guanzheng and Xi Jinping had also paid visits to our university. The development of NCU was listed among the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" by the Provincial Committee and the Provincial Government of Jiangxi Province, and the grand objective of developing NCU into a high-level research-oriented university was also made.
   NCU is located in the historical and cultural city--Nanchang, the capital city of Jiangxi Province, which enjoys the names of "a blessed place rich in culture and capable of nurturing talented people" and "the city of heroes". NCU is composed of five campuses, which are Qianhu Main Campus, Qingshanhu Campus, Donghu Campus, Poyanghu Campus and Fuzhou Campus, which occupy a total area of 8,062 Chinese Mu. Fully equipped with top level infrastructure, NCU provides network-based TV, telephone, IC Card, surveillance and public broadcasting which form a public service system with smoothly flowing and fully shared information and advanced equipment. NCU has a library with a collection of over 3.64 million books and was appointed the Jiangxi Record and Information Service Center by both the National Higher Education Record Center and Jiangxi Provincial Ministry of Education. NCU is the only Data Searching Working Station in Jiangxi Province entrusted by the Ministry of Education. NCU also has 10 attached hospitals, among which four are national comprehensive grade-A tertiary hospitals and one is grade-A tertiary stomatological Hospital. 
   NCU has a scientific discipline system which is characterized by rational layout and coordinated development. Doctorate programs and master's degree programs cover most of the undergraduate majors out of all the disciplines. Among the 96 undergraduate majors under 11 disciplines, there are 3 first-class discipline doctorate programs, 29 second-class discipline doctorate programs, 20 first-class discipline master's degree programs, 177 second-class discipline master's degree programs and 4 post doctorate mobile research station. The University also has master's degree programs for specialized majors such as Master of Engineering, programs for in-job university teachers and those equivalents are also available. NCU owns and operates state key laboratory, state key disciplines, key laboratory and engineering research center entrusted by the Ministry of Education, key research base of humanity and social sciences and innovation team also entrusted by the Ministry of Education, national clinical pharmacology base, State Research Center of Stem Cell Technology Jiangxi Branch, state-level demonstration center for experimental teaching, state-level characteristic undergraduate majors, state-level teaching group, state-level fine course, national bilingual-teaching demonstration course and 41 key academic subjects that are listed in the provincial “Eleventh Five-Year Plan" .
   NCU has a highly dedicated and professional teaching staff of 2,559, among which 1071 are professors and associate professors, which takes about 42% of the total; 464 of them hold PhDs and 261 of them are studying for PhD while they are still at their teaching positions; 1,502 of them hold master's degrees which takes about 59% of the total. There are members of the distinguished Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (4 of them are members of both Academies), "Changjiang" scholar, and member of the Subject Assessing Group of the Academic Degrees Committee under the State Council. Some of them were given the title of "Young and Middle-aged Expert Who Has Made Outstanding Contributions to the Country" or the title of "Young and Middle-aged Expert Who Has Made Outstanding Contributions to Ministry of Health”. Some of them were given the title of "National Distinguished Teacher", and some of them received the "Bethune Medal". Besides, some teachers are among the first- and second-rank talents in the national "Key Talents Project"; some of them are in the "Supporting Program for New Century Excellent Talents in University", which was started by the Ministry of Education; some of them are invited professors with the title of "Jinggang Scholars", and some of them are invited professors with the title of "Ganjiang Scholars" given by Nanchang University.
   NCU is an excellent university in the aspect of undergraduate course assessment conducted by Ministry of Education. In recent years, with insisting on the school running idea of "talents-cultivation oriented, both teaching and scientific research emphasized, inclusive and practical" and the talents-cultivating idea of "combining ability with moral integrity, unifying of knowledge and practice", NCU has endeavored to realize the objective of cultivating senior specialized talents with high comprehensive quality, rational knowledge structure, solid basis, broad spectrum of knowledge, creative spirit and practical ability. There are 89,890 students of various types, among whom 71,696 are full-time undergraduate and junior college students, 8,391 are graduate students of various types. In recent years, lots of students have won the first prizes in a series of national competitions such as China Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling and "Challenge Cup" Science Competition, etc. NCU is also one of the initial universities that are listed in the undergraduate innovative experimental plan project.
   NCU places great emphasis on international exchanges and cooperation. It has established steady relationship of exchanges and cooperation with more than 50 universities and research institutions from over 30 countries and regions worldwide. NCU jointly established the first Confucius Institute with the University of Poitiers in France, which was the first one in Western Europe. NCU has always been active in international exchange activities such as International Academic Debate Contest and Cross-Strait Undergraduate Debate Contest, etc. Through taking part in these activities, students have been broadening their vision to a national or even an international level. In Oct. 2006, the President of Philippines-Ms. Arroyo visited our university and made a keynote speech.


Jiangxi Normal University


   Jiangxi Normal University is located in Nanchang, a city with profound history and culture and with the name of "a blessed place rich in culture and capable of nurturing talented people". It consists of three campuses, which are Yaohu Campus, Qingshanhu Campus and Qingyunpu Campus. It covers a total area of 3,600 Chinese mu, with a floorage of over 1 million square meters. Jiangxi Normal University originated from Lushan White Deer Grotto Academy and developed from National Zhongzheng University established in 1940. It was renamed National Nanchang University in 1949 and Jiangxi Normal College in 1953 respectively. And finally, in the year of 1983, it was renamed Jiangxi Normal University.
   National Zhongzheng University was the first comprehensive university in the history of school running in Jiangxi. At the beginning of its establishment, it has set up subjects including arts, law, economics, science, engineering and agriculture. After the rename in 1949, it was still a national comprehensive university, which was directly under the leadership of Central South Ministry of Education. In the year of 1953, during the national university and college adjustment, most of disciplines and majors in National Nanchang University were adjusted to other 14 universities in central southern district, such as Wuhan University, Zhongshan University and Huazhong Industrial College, etc., and only 7 subjects in Normal Department were kept, which were Chinese, history, biology, mathematics, physics, chemistry and art. The school had been changed to Jiangxi Normal College, with its nature transferring from a comprehensive university to a normal college for middle school teacher cultivation. Meanwhile, based on Agricultural School of National Nanchang University, Jiangxi Agricultural College (the current Jiangxi Agricultural University) had been established independently. In the year of 1962, Biology Department of Jiangxi Normal College was transferred to Jiangxi University (the current Nanchang University). From 1950s to 1970s, Jiangxi Normal College had actively supported prefectures and cities within Jiangxi Province to set up and operate specialized higher normal schools and Branch College of Jiangxi Normal College, which have been developed into undergraduate universities nowadays. It can be seen that Jiangxi Normal University has not only supported the constructions of many domestic key universities and made significant contribution to the construction and development of national higher education, but also laid the foundation for the construction and development of some universities in Jiangxi Province.
   Since the reform and opening up, Jiangxi Normal University has taken on great vitality. It has been determined by the provincial government as a provincial key comprehensive university for priority development. with a discipline combination of Arts, history, philosophy, economics, administration, law, science, engineering and education, with normal majors and non-normal major developing simultaneously, and which has laid major influence on the political, economic, cultural and social development of Jiangxi Province. Jiangxi Normal University is approved to grant doctor’s degrees and is among the first national authorized units to confer bachelor’s degrees and master’s degrees. Currently there are 4 doctorate programs (which have filled the blank of doctorate programs of humanity and social sciences in Jiangxi Province), 89 master’s degree programs (10 of them are first-class discipline master’s degree programs), 3 specialized master’s degree programs and 52 bachelor’s degree programs. Jiangxi Normal University owns 17 key disciplines at the provincial level, 1 key laboratory entrusted by the Ministry of Education, 6 key laboratories at the provincial level, 1 key engineering technology research center at the provincial level, 1 university software science and technology center, 1 university engineering technology research center, 1 university technology park at the provincial level and 3 key research bases of humanity and social sciences at the provincial level.
   Jiangxi Normal University is composed of 23 schools, with currently over 30,000 full-time undergraduate and junior college students, more than 1,600 doctor and postgraduate students and over 5000 students studying for adult higher education. The permanent teaching and administrative staff is exceeding 2,500, among whom there are more than 1740 full-time teachers. Among those full-time teachers, 48% are with high titles, 51% are postgraduates and 52% are less than 35 years old. Among those permanent teachers, 3 were given the title of "Young and Middle-aged Expert Who Has Made Outstanding Contributions to the Country"; 27 enjoy governmental special allowance of the State Council; 10 enjoy special allowance of the provincial government; 4 are “Trans-century Major Academic Discipline and Technical Leader Candidates of Jiangxi Province”; 12 are among the first- and second-rank talents in the national "Key Talents Project"; 48 are “University Young and Middle-aged Academic Leaders in Jiangxi Province”; 43 are “University Young and Middle-aged Backbone Teachers in Jiangxi Province”; 23 were given the title of “National Model Teacher”, “National Excellent Teacher”, “National University Excellent Young Physical Education Teacher” or “Distinguished Teacher of Jiangxi Province”. Furthermore, Jiangxi Normal University has invited 10 academicians, including Wang Zikun, Yang Shuzi and Liu Yingming, and some experts and scholars who are famed home and abroad to be adjunct professors or guest professors.
   Students in Jiangxi Normal University have achieved excellent performance in professional contests and science and technology activities, etc. For instance, Yang Wenjun participated in the 28th Olympic Games in Athens and won a gold medal; Ouyang Kunpeng took part in the 22nd  World University Games, won 2 championships and broke the record; Aerobics team of the university represented our country to attend the 8th World Sports Aerobics Championship, and achieved China’s zero breakthrough of medal in international competitions of sports aerobics; Ai Lisha participated in 2004 “CCTV Cup” English Speech Contest and won the first place; Li Fan took part in 2003 National TV Music Competition of Young Singers and won bronze prize; Zhou Li won 2004 National Teenager Technical Innovation Talent Prize; “Blue Sky” Environmental Protection Society was chosen as National Excellent University Society and Undergraduate Demonstration Society in Jiangxi Province, gained outstanding performance for several times in China Wetlands Ambassador Programs, was praised by World Wildlife Fund, National Administration of Forestry and other units, and won the first place in the bidding of “Wetlands Ambassador Program” organized by World Wildlife Fund.
   Jiangxi Normal University has been taking a vigorous part in developing scientific research, continuously promoting technical innovation, utilizing scientific research to boost teaching, and has accomplished favorable achievements. Jiangxi Normal University has undertaken, since the year of 2002, 25 NSFC projects, 13 national social science fund projects, 3 key scientific and technological projects listed in the “Tenth Five-year Plan” of Ministry of Science and Technology, 1 SME Innovation Fund Program of Ministry of Science and Technology, 1 National Key Product Project, 2 National “863” projects, 3 “973” preliminary research projects, 1 national soft science project, 11 national education science plan projects and 1 provincial social sciences plan major bid invitation project. Gross expenditure on scientific research has been largely increased from RMB 11,250,000 in 2002 to RMB35,000,000 in 2005. Jiangxi Normal University has won 1 first prize and 1 third prize on natural science of Jiangxi Province, 1 first prize and 1 second prize on progress in science and technology in Jiangxi Province, 3 first prizes, 8 second prizes and 9 third prizes on excellent achievement of social sciences of Jiangxi Province. It has published over 400 works and over 4000 academic theses, among which more than 250 were included in SCI, EI or ISTP.
   Jiangxi Normal University has positively developed foreign exchanges and cooperation, and has successively established relationship of friendly cooperation with over 30 universities from Russia, the USA, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea, the U.K., Hong Kong SAR and Taiwan, etc. In recent three years, Jiangxi Normal University successively signed master cultivation programs with University of Canberra of Australia, University of Teesside of the U.K., Okayama Shouka University and Kagawa University of Japan and Catholic University of Daegu of South Korea, and implemented mutual recognition of course credits and exchange of students. Meanwhile, Jiangxi Normal University has invited some foreign teachers to give lessons, among whom Constance Gibson has been awarded “National Friendship Prize”. Jiangxi Normal University also in sequence recruited abroad students from Japan, Australia, South Korea, the USA, Indonesia, Hong Kong SAR and Taiwan to study there.

 
Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics


   Jointly constructed by the central and local governments, Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics is a teaching research-oriented multiversity with economics and administration as its major disciplines and with coordinated development of law, engineering, arts and science. In 2002 and 2007, JUFE successfully passed undergraduate course assessment conducted by Ministry of Education, and got “Excellence” for both the assessments. On Feb. 6, 2008, Premier Wen Jiabao spent the New Year’s Eve with teachers and students of JUFE and delivered keynote speech. He praised, “Your school is a very good one”. This will always encourage JUFE to keep the spirit of struggle and do well in providing satisfactory education to the people.
   The predecessor of JUFE was Jiangxi Provincial Commercial School founded in the fall of 1923. In the year of 1958, Jiangxi College of Finance and Economics was established, and was renamed Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics in 1996. JUFE is located in Nanchang, which enjoys the name of “the city of heroes”. To its east, there is Ganjiang River; to its west, there is Meiling Hill; to its north, we can see splendid Lushan Mountain; to its south, we can appreciate the grand Jinggang Mountain. JUFE is composed of four campuses, which are Jiaoqiaoyuan Campus, Mailuyuan Campus, Fenglinyuan Campus and Qingshanyuan Campus. It covers an area of 2260 Chinese mu, with a building area of over 900,000 square meters. The library of JUFE houses 3.1 million volumes of books (including e-books). The campus is fragrant, quiet and in picturesque disorder. Trees are in great numbers and green, and the lakes are rippling. JUFE is among the Top 300 National Afforestation Units. The long-breathed and magnificent Chunqiu Park enjoys a history of over eighty years. Grand and magnificent campuses exhibit high-spirited development vitality.
   JUFE is comprised of 18 teaching units, which are School of Business Administration, School of Public Administration, School of Accountancy, School of International Economics and Trade, School of Economics, School of Finance, School of Statistics, School of Tourism, School of Information Management, School of Ufida Software, School of Electronics, School of Foreign Languages, School of Humanity, School of Law, School of Art and Communication, School of Resources and Environmental Management, School of Physical Education and International School, and 6 specialized scientific research institutions, which are Research Institute of Economic and Social Development, Research Center of Regulation and Competition, Research Center of Industrial Cluster and Enterprise Development, Research Center of Accounting Development, Research Center of Financial Development and Risk Prevention and Research Center of Ecological Civilization and Modern China. JUFE owns 3 post doctorate mobile stations, which are Applied Economics, Theoretical Economics and Management Science and Engineering, 1 first-class doctorate program of Management Science and Engineering, 9 second-class doctorate programs, which are Industrial Economy, Political Economics, Public Finance, Western Economics, Accounting, Information Management and Information System, E-commerce and E-government; Economic Management Decision and Analysis and Management Theory and Enterprise Management, 53 master’s degree programs, including 4 specialized master’s degree programs, i.e., MBA, MPA, JM and MPAcc; 6 first-class discipline master’s degree programs and 47 undergraduate majors. JUFE also possesses 1 state key cultivated discipline, 2 state-level characteristic undergraduate majors, 4 state-level fine courses, 1 state-level bilingual-teaching demonstration course, 1 state-level teaching group, 1 state-level demonstration center for experimental teaching and 2 state-level talents cultivation experimental zones; JUFE is entitled to recommend undergraduate students for graduate study without examination and also continuous academic programs which involve postgraduate and doctorate study; JUFE is also given the titles of “National Undergraduate Innovative Experiment Plan Project School”, “Undergraduate English Teaching Reform Demonstration Project School” and “Undergraduate Cultural Quality Educational Base of Ministry of Education”. In 2007 and 2008, the numbers of national social science fund projects were in the second and third place among national universities of finance and economics respectively. In 2008, the number of national social science fund projects was in the first place within Jiangxi Province for the 11th time. JUFE edits and publishes two academic journals, Contemporary Finance & Economics (monthly) and Journal of Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics (bimonthly), which are published home and abroad. Contemporary Finance & Economics has been chosen by State Press and Publication Administration as one of “National Top 100 Excellent Periodicals” and “National Top 30 Journals of Social Science”.
   Through years’ development, JUFE has formed a pattern with undergraduate education as the main part, postgraduate education as the leading part, higher vocational education, continuing education and international student education as the supplementary part. JUFE makes its recruitment in 30 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities in the country, among 23 of which the recruitment is made in the key level. There are currently 34,000 students of various types, among them 25,000 are full-time students (including 17,660 undergraduate students, 2196 graduate students and 4128 higher vocational students). Students are from 32 ethnic groups. Employment of students maintains a good trend. In recent three years, the annual employment rate for university graduates is over 85%, 100% for postgraduates, and 91% for higher vocational graduates. JUFE has successively gained the honor of “Advanced Group of University Graduate Employment Work” and “Excellent Level for University Graduate Employment Work Assessment”.
   The groups of teachers in JUFE are structurally reasonable. It has currently 2278 faculty members, 1395 full-time teachers, among which 208 are professors and 370 are associate professors, 349 doctors, 199 doctorial students, 53 doctorial tutors and 323 master tutors. 1 won the first National Outstanding Teacher Award; 2 are evaluation experts for national social science fund projects; 2 are given the title of “National Model Teacher”; 10 have been chosen as the “National Excellent Teachers”; 3 are members of National University Teaching Direction Committee; 2 has been selected for the "Program for New Century Excellent Talents in University", which was started by the Ministry of Education; 23 enjoy governmental special allowance of the State Council; 71 are Young and Middle-aged University Academic Leaders in Jiangxi Province; 43 are Young and Middle-aged Backbone Teachers in Jiangxi Province; 17 are “University Distinguished Teachers” in Jiangxi Province; 17 are among the first- and second-rank talents in the "Key Talents Project" in Jiangxi Province.
   JUFE adheres to enlightening and open school running concept. It has established steady relationship of cooperation and exchanges with 75 universities from 17 countries and regions, which are Vienna University of Economics and Business, Australian National University, Lancaster University of the U.K., New York Institute of Technology of the USA, University of Oulu of Finland and Sogang University of South Korea, etc. For students with various levels, such as graduate students, undergraduates and higher vocational students, there are overseas exchange projects, among which 11 are foreign exchange projects with full foreign tuition waiver and over 70 are self-supporting study abroad projects. In order to promote internationalized school running process, JUFE established International School in 2002 and set up undergraduate teaching experimental class with three majors, which are International Accounting, International Finance and International Commerce. This school currently has 2066 enrolled students. Its teaching style and resources have been brought in line with international levels. At present, it has gradually formed schooling characteristics of “teaching is learning; blending of the east and the west; acting as an intermediary for introducing foreign capital and establishing domestic connections; grafting at high levels”.

 
Jiangxi Agricultural University 


   Jiangxi Agricultural University is a multiversity with agriculture as its advantaged major, with biotechnology as its featured major and with discipline comprehensive development of science, engineering, agriculture, economics, administration, arts, law and education. It is one of the first universities in China that are entitled to award bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. Located in Nanchang Economic and Technological Development District, Jiangxi Agricultural University, which covers a total area of 3950 Chinese mu, is with beautiful campus and enchanting scenery. There are currently over 23,000 full-time students of various types.
   History of the university dates back to October, 1940 when National Zhongzheng Institute of Agriculture was founded. In 1949, the institute was renamed School of Agriculture of Nanchang University, which turned into Jiangxi Institute of Agriculture in 1952. In 1969, the institute integrated with Jiangxi Communist Labor University established in 1958, giving rise to Jiangxi Agricultural University that took shape in November of 1980.
   Jiangxi Agricultural University is composed of 16 schools and boasts 14 ministerial and provincial disciplines, 58 undergraduate disciplines, of which one is national special discipline of Class II, two are special disciplines of Class I, four are special disciplines in Jiangxi Province and nineteen are brand disciplines in Jiangxi Province. Besides, master’s degrees are granted in eight disciplines of Class I and fifty-two disciplines of Class II, of which five are demonstration disciplines in Jiangxi Province. Master’s degrees can also be awarded to in-service postgraduates of four majors. In addition, doctoral programs are offered in five disciplines, and there is one post-doctoral research station.
   Currently, over 1,440 faculty members are working in the university, including 487 senior specialized professionals, such as professors and associate professors, 141 doctors, of whom some are renowned as National Skilled Teacher and some are National Model Teachers, as well as 10 part-time professors, 8 of whom are academicians and 2 are invited professors in Cheung Kong Scholars Program. Moreover, some teachers are nominated for “National Key Talents Project”, “Young and Middle-aged Experts with Outstanding Contribution in State-level” and “Excellent Young Teacher Supporting Project” launched by Ministry of Education. In addition, there are National Excellent Teaching Team, four Provincial Excellent Teaching Teams and Science Innovation Team in Jiangxi Province. Jiangxi Agricultural University features one National Key Laboratory Cultivation Base, two Key Laboratories of the Ministry of Agriculture, one Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education, three provincial leading laboratories, two university leading laboratories in Jiangxi Province, one provincial university research center of humanities and social science, one key laboratory in Nanchang City, one National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center and five Provincial Experimental Teaching Demonstration Centers, thirty-three research centers or institutions and one Agricultural Science Park. Moreover, there is one National Professional Training Center, whose construction Ministry of Education has laid emphasis on. The university library which has achieved automatic management is home to over one million books, including Chinese periodicals concerning science and technology, Chinese academic journals as well as databases like EBSCO and Springer.
   Jiangxi Agricultural University has always attached great importance to teaching and research and has achieved great progress in talent training, scientific research and social service. For near seventy years, over 70 thousand graduates have made great contributions to agricultural production, management and operation as well as promotion of agricultural technology. Over the past three years, Jiangxi Agricultural University has carried out over 900 research programs, including 40 national ones in natural science with one sponsored by the National Outstanding Youth Fund, 6 national ones in social sciences, 37 awards in science and technology by central or provincial governments or ministries, of which two are national awards for advancement of science and technology and one is national award for teaching; The university has yielded 44 research fruits, including a new strain of rice; the past three years has also witnessed publication of over 320 works or teaching materials, over 3,400 papers and more than 130 research results publicized in SCI, EI and ISTP. In accordance with economic development, Jiangxi Agricultural University has promoted scientific research and practical techniques with mature technology and strong operability in many provinces.
   As one of the first institutions embracing the opening-up policy and authorized to recruit overseas scholars in Jiangxi Province, Jiangxi Agricultural University, entitled to enroll international students, has vigorously promoted international exchanges and cooperation. Foreign academic exchanges become gradually active. It has established close relationships with universities and research institutes in such countries or regions as the U.S.A, the Netherlands, Germany, the U.K, Japan, Australia, Russia and Canada. Meanwhile, more than 10,000 overseas experts and scholars have visited Jiangxi Agricultural University. 


East China Jiaotong University


   East China Jiaotong University (ECJTU) is located in Nanchang, which enjoys the names of "a blessed place rich in culture and capable of nurturing talented people" and "the city of heroes". ECJTU is a comprehensive university, focusing on engineering and also emphasizing the development of other fields such as economics, administration, arts and science, etc. ECJTU enrolls students in the whole country and has got permission of recruiting students from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and overseas. Since 2004, ECJTU has signed a contract with Nanjing Military Region to recruit, select and foster Reserve Officers (National Defense students). In the February of 2006, Nanjing Military Region donated a honorary medal writing "Contribute to employment and enrollment, Benefit the country and the Army” to ECJTU.

   On Sep 22, 1971, the State Council and the Military Commission of the Central Committee of CPC jointly issued "The Notice on Six Universities' System Adjustment and Leadership". They decided to merge the Locomotive and Railway Car Department of Shanghai Jiaotong University and Railway Engineering major of Tongji University into Shanghai Railway Institute. The whole institute moved to Nanchang City in Jiangxi Province and was renamed East China Jiaotong University. The university used to be under the administration of China Ministry of Railways. Later from March of the year 2000, the university has come under the leadership of both the central and the local governments, but is managed principally by the latter, and it has been listed as one of the key universities to strengthen the construction by Jiangxi Province. Covering an area of 2800 Chinese mu, decorated by green hills and pretty lakes, its campuses are very charming and attractive. As one of the National Top 300 Afforested Institutes, ECJTU is a veritable garden university.
   At present, ECJTU has 16 schools, offering 53 specialties for undergraduate education, 5 first-class specialties and 46 second-class specialties for postgraduate education. ECJTU is a planning construction unit of authority to confer doctoral degree and a MBA cultivation unit approved by the State Council Academic Degrees Committee. ECJTU now owns 13 key disciplines at the provincial level, 17 brand majors at the provincial level and 5 specialty majors at the provincial level, among which Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Automation, Water Supply and Sewage Engineering are specialty majors at the national level. Now there are over 20,000 registered students and more than 1600 faculty members in ECJTU, including over 450 professors and associate professors. Over 60 of them are selected in the national "Key Talents Project” or honored as “Superior Scientific and Technological Talent at Provincial (Ministerial) Level”, “National Excellent Teacher” or “Young and Middle-aged Academic Leader”,  and 37 are entitled to special allowance of the government.
   ECJTU provides first-class education conditions, modernized teaching & learning buildings and well-equipped central laboratories. “Railway Environmental Vibration and Noise Engineering Center” is the engineering research center entrusted by Ministry of Education and post-doctoral research station of Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security. "Vehicle and Equipment Laboratory” is a key laboratory entrusted by the Ministry of Education. The library, with a collection of 255.45 million books, owns the first-class consulting station of Chinese literature and academic magazines. 120 bases for students’ social practice have been established by ECJTU in over 10 provinces and areas in China. ECJTU has once won the first prize of National Award for Science and Technology Progress, which is the only one among the universities in Jiangxi Province.
   In the National University Games, woman’s team of ECJTU once ranked the 1st for group and the total score of both man and woman teams won the 2nd. The university has also won many prizes in various sports competitions. ECJTU has participated in CUBA on behalf of the provincial universities for many times and ever hosted the games of the Southeast Division. In May of 2004, ECJTU became one of the owners of Nanchang Bayi Hengyuan Football Club, providing bases for their living, study and training.
   ECJTU takes an active part in international exchanges and cooperation. It has become sister-school of Pittsburg State University of the USA, Troy University of the USA, Ball State University of the USA, University of Salford of the UK, University of New Brunswick of Canada; Kyushu Institute of Technology of Japan; Swinburne University of Technology of Australia; Clausthal University of Technology of Germany, Irkutsk State University of Railway Engineering of Russia, and established favorable relationship of cooperation with them.
   ECJTU enjoys a good social reputation. In 2002 and 2004, the school was awarded “Advanced Group of Ordinary University Enrollment Work in Jiangxi Province” for twice. The high quality of source condition lays strong foundation for the high quality of cultivation of talents. In recent years, the employment for our students has ranked top among the local universities. ECJTU was voted the “Advanced Group of Ordinary University Graduates' Employment Work in Jiangxi Province” in 1999-2000, 2001-2003, 2004-2006 consecutively, and was appraised to be excellent in the assessment of high and middle school normal graduates' employment work of the province by the Provincial Ministry of Education in 2003-2004, 2004-2006 consecutively.

Nanchang Hangkong University


   Established in October of 1952, Nanchang Hangkong University, enrolling students from all over the country, specializes in engineering, science, arts, and administration courses as well as courses in economics, law and education. NCHU is one of the first universities in China that are entitled to grant bachelor’s degrees. In the year of 1985, NCHU began to carry out postgraduate programs and was entitled to award master’s degrees in 1990. NCHU used to be affiliated to China Aviation Industry Bureau, Ministry of Aero-space Industry and China National Aviation Industry Corporation. In 1999, NCHU began to enforce a management system of “joint construction by central and local governments and main administration by the latter”.  Now NCHU is an institution of higher education with distinct aviation and national defense features, which is jointly constructed by Jiangxi Provincial People’s Government and Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (the successor of Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense).
   With a building area of over 900,000 square meters, NCHU occupies an area of 3000 Chinese mu. There are currently near 20,000 full-time students, among which over 800 are graduate students. NCHU owns more than 23,000 sets of equipments for teaching and scientific research, with a total value of approximate RMB 165,000,000. NCHU library is home to over 1,400,000 volumes of books, over 640,000 disks of e-books and more than 2500 kinds of periodicals in Chinese or in English. Besides, 20 databases for electronic documentation home and abroad have been set up. Physical activity space covers an area of 120,000 square meters and is equipped with top-grade sports facilities. There are standard track and field stadium, gymnasium, natatorium, student activity centre and 61 ball game courts.
   NCHU has currently near 2000 faculty members. There are over 1200 full-time teachers, including over 170 professors and over 300 associate professors, taking up 40% of the total; over 200 teachers are with doctor’s degrees and over 600 with master’s degrees, which altogether take up 70% of the total; 28 of them enjoy special allowance of the government; 6 of them won the title of “National Excellent Teacher”; there are 12 doctorial tutors and 176 master tutors; 1 teacher won the prize of “National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars”; 1 of them is listed among the “Academic Backbone Teachers of the First Philosophy and Social Science Research in Jiangxi Province”; 1 won the title of “Jinggang Scholar”; 38 are academic leaders at the provincial (ministerial) level; 53 are listed among the “Young and Middle-aged Backbone Teachers at the Provincial (Ministerial) Level”; 22 are among the first- and second-rank talents in the "New Century Key Talents Project" in Jiangxi Province; 13 are the “Distinguished Teachers” in Jiangxi Province; NCHU also employs 1 member of Chinese Academy of Sciences with two titles, 3 members of Chinese Academy of Engineering and over 200 part-time teachers.
   Since its foundation, NCHU has cultivated over 50,000 graduates of various types. In recent years, once employment rate for graduates is exceeding 90%. Over 30% graduates are serving enterprises and public institutions concerning national defense and the Army.

In NCHU, there are also 2 national experimental teaching demonstration centers, including Engineering Training Center and College Physics Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, and 8 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers.
   NCHU insists on the service positioning of “Base on Jiangxi; face to the whole country; serve the local and serve national defense”. Over the years, NCHU has been vigorously serving local economic and social development of Jiangxi Province by transporting lots of talents. In the meantime, NCHU has established close relationship of cooperation with enterprises and public institutions and scientific research institutions concerning aerospace, such as China Aviation Industry Corporation, Chinese Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, China Airborne Missile Academy, Guizhou Aviation Industry Corporation, China Institute of Aeronautical Materials. Entrusted by People's Liberation Army Navy, NCHU cultivates national defense students for the Navy and is the national defense student cultivation base with the largest student scale among the 14 universities entrusted by the Navy to cultivate students.
   NCHU has positively carried out international cooperation and exchanges of various forms, and has built long-term relationship of interscholastic cooperation with Japan, Canada, Ukraine, the UK, Australia, France, Finland and South Korea. Foreign teachers and experts are invited to teach here throughout the year.
